Solo Stand Up Paddle Across Lake Ontario

Paddle With Me “online” in Real Time

On September 9th, I sent this email to a group of friends, Toronto based water enthusiasts:

I will be living on my inflatable SUP for the next 3 days. Feel free to join me on my journey across Lake Ontario and back along the shore, cca 160 kilometers. Live track:  https://share.garmin.com/LukasNovak [not live anymore]

I have started today (Saturday) at 14:00 and I am paddling into the night across the lake, direction Port Weller. My SUP is equipped with marine lights, bells and whistles. I intend to sleep at Port Dalhousie Marina when I get there either on the dock or I’ll just sleep on the SUP moored to a dock, depends on the situation. The next day I’d like to make it to Hamilton Beach to have a beer at Barangas On The Beach restaurant, and then camp "quietly" somewhere on the beach nearby. The last 50km stretch along Burlington, Oakville, and Mississauga is left for day 3. It should be a hell of a trip, the fine line between ultimate freedom and ultimate trouble. I will filter water from the lake to drink and cook my dehydrated food when I get hungry and reach a shore somewhere. You can also send me sat messages for free if you wish to keep me a company. I will be sending messages/updates directly to the satellite map during my trip.

Action,
Lukas

This 4-min. video “narrates” the whole journey and you can read the sat communication and emails below:

  • Hello Lukas,

Thank you for your lonekiter adventure…

When you crossed lake Ontario, did you do during sept?

What’s the reason for it instead of summer time.

    • Hello Anthony. Thank you for your comment. To answer your question, in September, I finally managed to combine my working schedule together with suitable weather for my Lake Ontario cross. August and September are the two really good months to do it; water is warmest, days are still long, and winds usually calm – especially in August. Water temp in July can be still bellow 15C most of the days.
